Tribalism & Empathy

Transcript

Why do you think empathy and morality measure so much to you?

I don't know why it matters to me. I can answer why I think it should matter to people.

I honestly think that if you look at the evolutionary process of humans as an organism throughout society, you come from tribalism, which is an animalistic way of thinking, which is local to me. That whatever's local to me is what I love and I'm loyal to. Is not local to me I must fear and fight and that's why I call it tribalism because even nowadays you know you can be proud to be Canadian or you can be proud to be Australian which is an unbelievably stupid mentality to have because you were born on a rock so you're proud of the rock that you were born on and you're going to have some sort of a difference between the other person because they were born on a different rock which you had no choice in. It doesn't benefit you in any way. It doesn't make you any different in any real way. Not in a real way. So I'm just very non-tribalistic.

And so if you think even about the rock thing how do you change that? How do you remove the tribalism from humans? You empathize. So if you're on that rock and you look at the other person you can empathize with one simple thing which is oh they're proud of their rock just like I'm proud of my rock and that makes us similar in some way which actually makes the rock dissolve and makes you feel more connected.

So to me empathy just makes people far less likely to treat people as separate to them and far more likely to treat them like family. And if people treat each other like family aside from the fact that morally you're less likely to fuck over someone who's your family, you're more likely to work together. And I believe two people working together and this is actually proven in factories and society produce significantly more than two individuals create on their own and then if you have three, it's exponential.

So not only are you morally nicer to each other, but as humans we can produce so much more.
